As many as 90% of developers expect to launch at least one new game in 2025, according to a new report from Metaplay.
The games backend tech provider company sureveyed 150 tech leads and c-suite level execs at studios using Unity for its Game Development Renaissance report, looking into perceptions of the year ahead following a tough couple of years for the games industry.
It found that 77% of developers are anticipating an increase in availability of funding for new studios, and 73% expect to see more acquisitions and exits throughout 2025.
Overall, 77% of respondents pronounced optimism towards the state of the industry this year.
This optimism covers multiple aspects of the industry both creatively and economically. More than two-thirds of developers shared a sentiment that there will be more “better quality games” in 2025, while 71% expect to see fewer layoffs and studio closures.
Back in business?
Entering 2025, the most considered game feature for devs at the conceptualising stage is cross-platform compatibility, as 71% believe there will be a greater demand for cross-play from players. By “launching on mobile first”, the report suggested there are certain advantages devs can leverage like maximising player reach and the ability to focus on live ops sooner.
The report claimed that 27% of developers are not considering live ops until a game has rolled out globally.
“That said, supporting multiple platforms brings complex infrastructure challenges like handling progression syncs, payment unification and matchmaking,” the report acknowledged.
According to those surveyed, 63% of developers anticipate lower game development costs this year, with AI technologies leading to lower costs.
“Our findings have shown that live ops, cross-platform development and external technology are at the heart of the Game Development Renaissance,” said Metaplay co-founder and CPO Teemu Haila.
“The Renaissance is so much more than a catchy headline. It’s a movement, a shift in the way game development is done. It represents an era where studios no longer have to rely on raw headcount to achieve growth. Instead, growth is achieved through smarter tooling, leaner teams, and sharper strategy.”
