Although it aired for a relatively short time in the ‘90s, Toxic Crusaders has become something of a cult for many people. Based on Troma’s The Toxic Avenger movies, this animated spin-off has unfortunately gotten only one season and 13 episodes. However, fans will surely remember it and be pleased to know that Toxic Crusaders is now officially coming back as a side-scrolling beat ‘em up.
The title will come to PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, and Series X|S later this year for $24.99. Toxic Crusaders is being developed and will be published by Retroware, a team specializing in creating retro-themed games for modern PC and consoles. In particular, Retroware’s portfolio includes Eagle Island Twist, a roguelite Metroidvania featuring procedurally generated dungeons, and Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe, a collection of platform games that takes inspiration from the popular YouTube series.
According to the Toxic Crusaders’ official Steam page, the game will feature seven playable characters, each with their own powers and combat styles, including Toxie, No-Zone, and Junkyard. Players will be asked to stop Dr. Killemoff’s vile plans to destroy the Earth, fighting against enemy forces (including zombie chickens) across seven pixel-art-styled levels. Local co-op with up to four players will also be available. You can check the official announcement trailer below.
Moreover, Toxic Crusaders fans will find various cameos from the Troma Cinematic Universe in the game. Among them, expect to see characters from Class of Nuke ‘Em High and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.
We still don’t have an exact date for the release of Toxic Crusaders, but the game’s official website states late 2023. We will update you as soon as we have new details about it.
