Microsoft is joining Sony to offer full refunds to anyone dissatisfied with Cyberpunk 2077 if they bought the game digitally on the Xbox store. However, the company is refraining from pulling the $59.99 game.
“To ensure that every player is able to get the experience they expect on Xbox, we will be expanding our existing refund policy to offer full refunds to anyone who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 digitally from the Microsoft Store, until further notice,” Microsoft said in a statement.
Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a buggy mess on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The situation has been so bad that developer CD Projekt Red apologized for problems and told any dissatisfied gamers that they could receive a refund. The only problem? As IGN points out, the developer made no special arrangement to ensure console owners could get their money back.
As a result, some gamers have been struggling to complete the refund process. But on Friday, the developer said it held discussions with Sony to temporarily pull the game from PlayStation’s digital store and offer full refunds.
It isn’t clear why Microsoft hasn’t pulled the game from the Xbox digital store. But the company agrees the response to Cyberpunk 2077 has been divisive. “We know the developers at CD Projekt Red have worked hard to ship Cyberpunk in extremely challenging circumstances. However, we also realize that some players have been unhappy with the current experience on older consoles,” the company said in a statement.
According to Microsoft, a “vast majority” of gamers who requested refunds have already received them. “To request an Xbox refund, please follow the steps listed on our Xbox refund page here,” a company spokesperson added.
If you got a physical copy of the game, CD Projekt Red says dissatisfied customers should first try returning Cyberpunk 2077 to the retailer they bought it from. “Should this not be possible, please contact us at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com and we will do our best to help you,” the company said earlier this week. However, the offer only lasts until Dec. 21.
