If you have your iPhone camera fixed or replaced with parts not authorized by Apple, you might see a warning on your smartphone going forward.
As MacRumors reports, the iOS 14.4 update will add an “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple camera” notice on devices with camera parts that don’t come from Apple. It does not appear this will affect how the camera works, though the feature is still in beta, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens when iOS 14.4 is released.
But as MacRumors notes, Apple has rolled out similar warnings about non-genuine batteries and displays, neither of which rendered them unusable. Like other warnings, they might pop up on your iPhone screen and persist in the Settings > General > About section of your iPhone.
The news isn’t particularly surprising. Apple has never loved people tinkering with its products, despite pushback from the “right to repair” crowd.
“Our goal is to achieve a safe and reliable repair for our customers,” Apple said in a 2019 letter to Congress. “Repairs performed by untrained technicians might not follow proper safety and repair procedures and could result in improper function, product quality issues or safety events.”
