The air of mystery surrounding OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei’s new Nothing venture continues today. We now have a launch window and a name for the company’s first product (and nothing else).
In a blog post, Pei confirmed that Nothing’s wireless earbuds will be called the Ear 1 and we should expect them to be available to buy in June. Unfortunately, that’s all we’re being told for now, with no details on the technology these earbuds will take advantage of or what the final design looks like.
Pei called his venture Nothing because he aims to “create a seamless digital future that looks, lives, and feels like nothing.” However, he admits, “For those hoping for a disappearing act overnight, Ear 1 falls short. The greatest visions are not realized with the flip of a switch, but instead through countless small successes. Ear 1 is just the start.”
Back in March, Nothing released a teaser image for a Concept 1 earbud, which used a transparent casing. It looks as though that will remain in the final Ear 1 design as although it remains top secret, Pei explained “Ear 1 combines notes of transparency, iconic form, and refined functionality.” And as to why Nothing decided to start with earbuds? “We believe the earphones market was begging for differentiation, a space where we can elevate design and deliver value from day one.”
