Peloton might be ready to expand beyond exercise bikes, treadmills, and fitness accessories. 9to5Google discovered references to rowing instructions in the latest update to the company’s Android app, which suggests the rumors that Peloton is planning to release a rower are true.
The references to an upcoming rower were found by decompiling version 1.0.331270 of the Peloton app released to the Google Play Store. 9to5Google was then able to examine the files inside the Android application package (APK) and discover the latest hints at Peloton’s plans.
Those hints included four instructions from potential rowing exercises as well as two encoded strings that when decoded revealed two potential product names, Mazu and Caesar, followed by “to inspiring scenic routes from around the globe.” Those potential names were also used in the “Just Mazu” and “Just Caesar” strings, which refer to Peloton’s non-guided exercise settings.
9to5Google said it also found signs of Peloton’s app including support for “counting your total strokes, as well as measuring your max stroke rate and average stroke rate,” when used with a rower. At that point it seems like it’s a matter of when, not if, Peloton will release a rower.
There have been other signs that Peloton has been working on a rower. Bloomberg reported on the company’s plans to enter the new product category in 2019, and in July, Connect the Watts spotted a job listing for a Senior Product Safety Engineer that confirmed a rower was on the way.
