WhatsApp is reportedly planning to release a native app for the iPad and introduce linked device support for Android tablets as part of its efforts to improve its experience on non-smartphones.
WABetaInfo said the new WhatsApp tablet apps will be part of multi-device 2.0, which is supposed to allow people to use “linked companion devices without the need to keep your phone connected,” as the company explains in a support article about the feature.
That capability should result in a marked improvement to WhatsApp’s apps for the web, desktop computers, and Facebook’s line of Portal devices. Now it seems it will also bring the messaging platform to the world’s most popular tablet over a decade after it was released on the iPhone.
WhatsApp has steadily improved its offerings in the last few months. It recently introduced disappearing messages on iOS—and later added vanishing photos and videos—as well as encrypted backups to cloud services and the ability to join video calls after they’ve started.
