If you’ve been working from home since the debut of COVID-19—and at its peak, 69% of office employees were doing just that—how is it going? Are you feeling more productive? Do you like your workspace? Do you feel motivated? The answer to most of these questions, for the majority of people who work from home, is yes, according to data collected by NowSourcing for the company TrackTime24.
Unfortunately, the data also shows that managers still aren’t happy with not being able to keep a literal eye on workers. Despite 42% of the US labor force officially working from home in 2021, and despite remote work saving companies a total of $700 billion in overhead costs such as rent in the US in just a year, all that good news is not enough.
The lack of managerial trust in employees, doubt in leadership pipelines, and discomfort with remote communication has allegedly resulted in rising micromanagement. Employees feel it: 71% of survey respondents said their work was impacted negatively. And employers say they’ve seen a 50% drop in productivity, even though 80% of employees at home claim they still hit all their project deadlines.
TrackTime24 didn’t commission this study out of altruism—the company makes apps for helping with time management, and part of the findings include a BusinessWire report claiming that 80% of employees think artificial intelligence programs can help. When more things such as payroll, scheduling, leave management, and so on are handled by AI, both workers and bosses may feel better.
