On Tuesday, Samsung was supposed to talk up a new Exynos 2200 mobile processor built with AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics. But no announcement ever arrived, making many wonder if the chip suffered an unforeseen setback.
Two weeks ago, Samsung teased the Exynos chip by releasing a short clip titled “Playtime is over.” In a tweet, the company added: “The gaming marketplace is about to get serious. Stay tuned for the next Exynos with the new GPU born from RDNA 2. January 11, 2022.”
However, Samsung has since deleted the original tweet, without offering any explanation. The company also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
For now, the electronics giant has only spoken to BusinessKorea about the chip’s delay.
“We are planning to unveil the new application processor at the time of launching a new Samsung smartphone,” a Samsung Electronics official told the publication. “There are no problems with the AP’s production and performance.”
So it’s possible the company decided to save the Exynos chip for a bigger stage. The Samsung Galaxy S22, the vendor’s flagship smartphone, will likely be announced and launched sometime next month. Still, the abrupt cancellation of the Jan. 11 unveiling isn’t a great sign. Already, rumors are swirling that the upcoming Exynos 2200 processor suffers from underwhelming performance and overhearting problems.
Nevertheless, the chip promises to stand out in the smartphone market by offering ray-tracing graphics, thanks to the RDNA 2 technology inside. In June, AMD first teased the processor by announcing its RDNA 2 architecture, which is already used in PC and console gaming, was expanding to the smartphone market.
However, Samsung was originally supposed to supply more details about the chip before the end of last year. It seems we’ll now have to wait even longer.
