Apple’s comically-expensive polishing cloth is proving very popular with consumers, but many buyers probably don’t realize until it comes time to clean the $19 cloth just how long it takes.
As 9To5Mac reports, Apple posted instructions on how to go about cleaning its special cloth on release last year. They are simple and short, but that doesn’t stop the process taking at least a day.
Three steps are required to rid the delicate cloth of dirt collected from your Apple displays. The first is to use dish soap and water as part of a hand wash, the second is to rinse the cloth thoroughly, and the third is to “allow the polishing cloth to air dry for at least 24 hours.”
If you like to give your Apple displays a wipe every day, this could prove problematic and may even lead to you considering purchasing a second polishing cloth. However, I think most owners will choose to use their cloth much less frequently, allowing ample time for it to dry properly after a clean.
Perhaps a future second-generation polishing cloth will cut the drying time to 12 hours, which would be more than enough of an excuse for Apple to charge more for it. And if you’d like to see a demonstration of how to clean the polishing cloth, Sascha is on hand to show you how in the video below.
