Bungie has revealed its first new project in more than a decade, Marathon – a sci-fi PVP extraction shooter coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with full crossplay.
The Sony-owned studio announced its new project, which is set in the same Universe as Bungie’s original Marathon games from the ’90s, through an announcement trailer. You’ll find this trailer below. We knew that the original Halo and Destiny developer was working on an entirely new game, and as reported in 2021, the title is said to feature a new secret world in parallel with the Destiny franchise.
“A massive ghost ship hangs in low orbit over a lost colony”, the description of the announcement trailer reads. “The 30,000 souls who called this world home have disappeared without a trace. Strange signals hint at rumors of mysterious artifacts, long-dormant AI, and troves of untold riches. You are a cybernetic mercenary – a Runner – and your destination is Tau Ceti IV. You are one of many, working solo or with a crew, venturing into the unknown and facing the unimaginable in a fight for survival, for riches, for fame… and for infamy. Who among you will write their names across the stars? “
On the official PlayStation Blog, Bungie’s General Manager Scott Taylor and Game Director Christopher Barrett talked about the multiplatform sci-fi PVP extraction shooter, which will feel very much like a “Bungie” game.
“With Marathon, one of the areas that is a big focus for us is our player-based storytelling”, game director Christopher Barrett explains. “The original Marathon games revealed story moments through terminals, all in text. But now we have so many more ways to immerse players in this world, both in and out of the game. We’ll be carrying that through in the design of this game.”
No release date for Marathon was given, but earlier, design director Jacob Benton said that the team is targeting a 2025 release. As said, despite being created by a Sony-owned studio, Marathon is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with full crossplay and cross-save support. Some more details about the game can be found on the official Marathon website here.
