Canada-based development program Scaffold has raised $1.5 million to support video game producers and start-ups in Alberta.
Sponsored by the Alberta government, the Scaffold Program will guide game producers from concept to production and aims to build publisher relations by collaborating with developers to enhance the business aspects of their games.
The program has now raised nearly $15 million for Western Canadian game companies. PrairiesCan, a federal department in Prairies province, has granted CAD$1 million ($732,000) to support economic growth in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
Alberta Innovates has committed CAD$750,000 ($549,000), and Shred Capital, managed by Scaffold leader Matt Toner, is providing CAD$250,000 ($183,000).
Empowering video game entrepreneurs
Scaffold aims to provide developers with mentorship, workshops, investor access, and guidance to grow Alberta’s gaming industry. The goal is to also double the number of small, to medium-sized game businesses in the province.
“Our government is making investments that empower innovative entrepreneurs across the Prairies to bring their ideas to market and grow their businesses,” said Dan Vandal, minister for PrairiesCan, in a news release via Edmonton Journal.
“Our partnership with Scaffold will bolster the capacity of Alberta’s tech firms to commercialise their digital media products and help drive the growth of Alberta’s interactive media sector.”
