More than 70% of Japanese mobile gamers and 90% of South Korean PC gamers are now playing games across multiple platforms.
This data comes from a Niko Partners East Asia Games Market report which also shows that more than half of the top 10% most played games in Japan and Korea are available on at least two game platforms.
In Japan, this trend is notably driven by a 30% year-on-year increase in mobile gamers also playing on consoles. However, there has been a 5% year-over-year increase in PC gamers trying other platforms, driven by the addition of mobile gaming.
PC and console drive future growth
Niko’s report also shows that Japan’s mobile game market is expected to be stagnant over the next five years. However, growth is expected in PC (5-year CAGR of 8.8%) and console gaming (5-year CAGR of 2.5%) due to multi-platform games and gamer’s increasing desire for them.
In Korea, both PC and mobile game market revenues are expected to stagnate too, while console gaming is projected to grow (5-year CAGR of 3.4%).
Multi-platform games are a clear driver for potential growth in both markets and an increasing focus for companies intending to release titles within these regions.
“We noticed a large increase in gamers reporting to play on more than one platform in the past year. Some of this is due to availability of consoles in Japan after scarcity during the pandemic,” said Niko Partners CEO Lisa Hanson.
“And some of it is due to more games being developed for multi-platform use that drive engagement on consoles, mobile and PC. What is notable is that gamers in East Asia demonstrate that cross-platform games lead to higher engagement.”
