A Nightmare on Elm Street is celebrating its 40th anniversary by slashing its way back into reality with a brand-new 4K Blu-ray release. The Wes Craven-directed classic is getting a limited edition with a grotesquely gorgeous steelbook case. Preorders are live now at Amazon for $36.49 ahead of its October 1 release. The 4K steelbook edition is only a couple bucks more than the non-steelbook version, and both releases come with a digital copy of the film. While you wait for the 4K release, you could watch the other films in the franchise with the help of this seven-film Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-ray box set for only $30.

It’s not uncommon for steelbook editions of 4K releases to sell out, especially when they are this popular more than a month before launch.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 40th Anniversary Limited Edition
An all-time classic of the horror-slasher genre, A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced the world to Freddy Krueger, a serial killer with a face that looked like a burnt pizza. Armed with his signature glove, the twist here is that Krueger had been dead for years prior to the film kicking off, as the infamous Springwood Slasher was brunt alive by a town mob that took justice into its own hands. Krueger struck a deal with demonic forces, and he’d return to Springwood to start a new reign of terror. Targeting the children of the people who murdered him, Krueger would hunt them in their dreams, killing them off one-by-one, and inspiring a wicked-cool nursery rhyme in the process.
For this release, the steelbook cover here is a fantastic display of new art on the exterior and a screenshot from the film printed on the inside. There’s a ton of great bonus features here as well, as the disc contains alternate takes, filmmaking secrets behind this low-budget horror, commentary tracks, and several featurettes. The Blu-ray also comes with a digital streaming code, in case you don’t have the disc on hand.
Notably, it includes Never Sleep Again, the excellent 2010 documentary that offers a comprehensive look into the making of the iconic franchise. If you consider yourself a Fredhead, It’s a must-see deep dive for Fredheads, and considering the Blu-ray edition of the documentary can be pricey nowadays, it’s great to see it included in the special features for the 40th Anniversary release.
