China’s publication authority approved 117 video games in August to mark the largest batch of titles licensed in 2024 so far.
As reported by Game World Observer, the approved list is available on the regulator’s official website and includes games from other companies like Perfect World, Yoozoo Games, and 37Games.
Titles licensed for domestic release include Tencent’s action game Yirenzhixia and 3D fighting title Project: The Outcast. NetEase games Jiewai Kuangchao and Fragpunk also bagged licences for domestic release.
Other approvals included Lingxi Games titles Huangyuan Shuguang and Dawn of the Wasteland, Hypergryph’s Arknights: Endfield, and 37 Interactive Entertainment’s Battle Through the Heavens: The Legend of Xiao Yan.
Domestic approvals
The NPPA has now licensed 850 domestic games in the first eight months of 2024, up from 609 during the same period in 2023.
This large number of approvals in August highlights a growing recovery of China’s games market since licensing resumed in April 2022 following an eight-month regulatory freeze – which wasn’t the first time that’s happened.
The National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) recently licensed over 100 domestic games and 15 titles from foreign developers. Approved games included Mario Golf: Super Rush, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and mobile games based on Final Fantasy XIV and Dynasty Warriors 8.
