Ahead of the session, we gave Boehm a quickfire Q&A to offer advice for others in the industry and give his opinions on the latest industry trends.
PocketGamer.biz: Please give us a summary of what you’re speaking about and why it’s important.
Robert Boehm: I will speak about the crucial steps developers should take before diving into multiplayer game development. The audience will learn to avoid typical pitfalls, and discover what to prioritise and what to avoid at the start.
We’ll focus on selecting the right multiplayer topology, discuss common mistakes, and share real-life examples to guide you toward success.
What’s the most common mistake you see being made in the games sector?
Too much money for the hype and buzz.
If you could give other mobile games companies one piece of advice, what would it be?
Prototype and test quickly. Move on if retention is too low.
Where are the next big opportunities in the mobile games market?
Multiplayer casual games.
What’s the most important key performance indicator (KPI) for you – and why?
Retention rate – you can’t build a successful business if players are not coming back.
What is the single biggest challenge facing the mobile games industry today?
Discoverability. There are so many great games out there that are hardly known.
What developments do you think have been undervalued by the mobile games industry?
I am often surprised that hardly anyone puts a highlight on the technology behind certain games. E.g. Stumble Guys’ success would not have been possible without the right technology. (Disclaimer: it is our Photon Quantum engine)
