A “fully featured” open-world Monster Hunter game is coming exclusively to mobile in the form of Monster Hunter Outlanders.
Co-developed by Capcom and Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studio Group, the newly revealed title promises a “traditional hunting experience” more akin to the console and PC titles, with solo and co-op play, as well as a range of environments and ecosystems to explore.
Mobile and the main series
Monster Hunter Outlanders has been described by its developers as “apart from other mobile games” in the series. Its other mobile titles are Capcom’s match-3 spinoff Monster Hunter Puzzles: Felyne Isles and Niantic’s location-based giant Monster Hunter Now.
There is currently no release date for the new mobile title. The development team has promised several playtests ahead of Outlanders’ full release.
The Monster Hunter franchise is no stranger to main series games on handhelds. Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter Generations all released on the Nintendo 3DS in the 2010s.
Then there was 2015’s Monster Hunter Explore, a quiet attempt at a main series-esque game on mobile that spent most of its lifespan as a Japan exclusive, besides three months of soft launch in Canada.
Since then the franchise has continued to grow in global popularity and Capcom believes “high-quality games have finally become playable on smartphones“.
Following the “roaring success” of Monster Hunter Now, Outlanders marks Capcom’s first clear attempt to take the main series to mobile.
“It’s time for mobile players to fully enjoy what makes Monster Hunter one of the most beloved franchises in gaming,” said TiMi Studio Group producer Dong Huang.
“Monster Hunter Outlanders not only offers players an authentic hunting experience, but it does it in a massive open world featuring the community and social systems players are looking for today.”
