Nexon and Tencent’s Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile has surpassed $1 billion in player spending on China’s App Store after just over six months on the market.
The beat ‘em up title hit $1 billion on December 1st, 2024 according to AppMagic estimates, without including player spending from third-party stores on Android. This means its true earnings even within China are higher still.
Fighting on
Tencent released this latest entry in Nexon’s Dungeon & Fighter series in China on May 21st, 2024. The title raced more than a quarter of the way to its first billion on iOS in just one month and made $500 million when including Android stores, according to data from Nexon and Sensor Tower.
Dungeon & Fighter was also China’s most downloaded game over its first 30 days.
On iOS specifically, June has proven to be the title’s most lucrative month so far in China with $244.1 million in player spending. This declined to $236.1 million in July, according to AppMagic.
Since then, player spending has continued to fall month-on-month, with November being its worst-performing month to date at $61.8 million.
Daily revenue did spike at the end of last month, however, reaching heights not hit since September, with $7.7 million on November 27th marking a 511% increase over the day prior.
The surge coincided with Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile’s “first full-level expansion update” in China, which brought with it a new story, new maps and extra equipment for warriors to unlock – and for players to reinvest in.
Daily revenue since the update has peaked at $7.9 million on November 28th. However this was still behind Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile’s most lucrative day in China, June 22nd, when it generated $9.9 million in a single day.
While its revenue has clearly slowed since its launch, Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile is plainly among 2024’s most meteoric mobile releases. It followed a seven-year development cycle as Nexon sought to adapt the original Dungeon & Fighter PC game from 2005.
Following its release in South Korea in 2022, players in China were forced to wait through government restrictions. Then, when it finally did release, for its first month, Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile even outearned Tencent’s flagship Honor of Kings.
