The Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially unveiled with a trailer providing a first look at the console giant’s latest hardware launching in 2025.
Officially called the Switch 2, the new system marks Nintendo’s first-ever console successor to use a conventional, numerical moniker, unlike the Super NES or the infamous Wii U.
The trailer did not reveal any specific hardware specs, but did offer glimpses at some changes.
Switching it up
After opening up with a visual of the Switch, the trailer depicted the 2017 console slowly transforming into its successor, showcasing the Switch 2’s larger size, more angular, black controllers and a versatile kickstand. The controllers were shown snapping onto the sides of the Switch 2 as opposed to slotting inside rails.
Nintendo has also confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with digital and physical games from its predecessor, though “certain” titles may not be fully compatible or supported.
A Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation scheduled for April 2nd, 2025 will provide a look at upcoming games for the platform. The reveal showcase gave a glimpse of the Switch 2 running a Mario Kart game.
Having sold over 64 million copies on Switch and nearly 8.5 million on Wii U, Mario Kart 8 is one of the best-selling games of all time.
Of course, there is a Mario Kart game on mobile too, though it received its final new content update more than a year ago.
