Sony may have jumped the gun when it said only 10 PS4 games would not be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 5.
On Friday, Ubisoft said nine of its own past PS4 titles are not compatible with the upcoming console. The titles include:
- Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia
- Risk
- Star Trek Bridge Crew
- Werewolves Within
- Space Junkies.
Ubisoft’s blog post doesn’t dive into details. So it remains unclear if the games simply won’t boot over a PS5, or if the gaming experience is too buggy, making them unplayable.
The real issue is how the blog post casts doubt on Sony’s claim that “more than 99 percent of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one.” According to Sony, PS5 owners will be able to enjoy more than 4,000 PS4 titles on the new console when it arrives Nov. 12. To play them, you can slot in a PS4 disc into the PS5’s Blu-ray drive, or download from the PlayStation Store.
The only exceptions to the backwards compatibility, Sony said, were 10 games—none of which are hugely popular. However, Ubisoft’s blog post suggests the list should expand to 19.
We’ve reached out to Sony and Ubisoft for comment, and we’ll update this story if we hear back. But in the meantime, Sony’s support document on the games not compatible with the PS5 does note: “This list is subject to change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.”
At the same time, Sony has acknowledged the backwards compatibility won’t always run smoothly. “Some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles,” the company added in the official support document.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft is pointing out that its Xbox One games are all backwards compatible with the upcoming Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, without elaborating.
