AppleCare+ extended warranties have to be purchased within 60 days of buying a new Apple device, but that’s no longer the case for some Apple products following a repair.
As MacRumors reports, an Apple internal memo has leaked explaining how iPhone and Mac owners can now be offered a second chance to purchase AppleCare+ following a repair. The repair must be carried out at an Apple Store or by an Apple Authorized Service Provider, but once complete, the customer is eligible for AppleCare+ again.
There are a couple of additional caveats to this offer, though. The first is that the device needs to be less than one year old, and the second is that it passes a physical inspection and diagnostics following the scheduled repair. That second caveat is clearly to cover Apple in case there’s anything else damaged on the device, which will also need repairing before AppleCare+ can be offered.
According to the memo, this offer is already available across all countries where AppleCare+ is available. And it makes business sense to once again offer this cover as the customer has just paid substantially more than they would if an extended warranty had been purchased when the device was new. They will therefore be more likely to consider paying for it now in case more damage occurs in future.
