Next Monday will see the public release of macOS Monterey, following a lengthy period of beta testing. But one element of the software hasn’t made the final cut: we now know that that the flagship Universal Control feature will have to wait for a later update.
MacRumors noticed that Apple has now added a footnote to its list of Monterey features saying Universal Control will be “available later this fall”. This confirms widespread suspicions that the feature faced delays, after the feature (which has been turned off by default since version five of the beta) was itself given beta status in the tenth beta released a week ago.
Universal Control will let you use the same keyboard and mouse for both Mac and iPad. All you have to do to switch devices is move the pointer until it crosses the edge of the screen. The new feature also makes it extremely easy to copy content between devices using drag-and-drop.
This is far from the first time Apple has decided to postpone a feature it previously promised would appear in a software release. For example, SharePlay was missing from the initial public versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 – but that feature is said to be coming in an update released next week.
