Apple has issued an update to iOS 12, but only for very old devices like the iPhone 6.
Apple released iOS 12 in September 2018, but surprisingly the system is more up-to-date than the main iOS 14 operating system as of today: Apple released version 12.5.1 for older devices like the iPad mini 2 and iPhone 6 on 11 January 2021.
iOS 12.5.1 is supposed to fix a bug in Messages. Apparently the logging profile could be displayed in a different language than the system language. We have some tips for fixing problems with Messages we also examine what to do if you aren’t getting text message notifications.
Apple has not closed any known security holes with the new version – or at least none are noted in the summary of the security updates in the support area of Apple’s website.
Why Apple still maintains iOS 12
iOS 12 is probably Apple’s longest-maintained mobile system. In December 2020 Apple brought released version iOS 12.5, which enabled Apple’s contact tracking APIs to also be used on older iPhones such as the iPhone 6. This has been a frequent demand from users since various governments around the world have released their Coronavirus warning app using the technology provided by Apple and Google.
It is possible that the various COVID tracker apps will also see an update following this update to iOS 12.5.
