German developer Deck13 Interactive and French publisher Focus Home Interactive have released a new gameplay trailer for Atlas Fallen. Titled ‘Rise from Dust’, it shows the game’s setting blended with several combat scenes.
Atlas Fallen was announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022. While Deck13 is one of the most successful developers in the Soulslike genre, having released Lord of the Fallen and the two The Surge games, this new IP will be a bit different. In an interview from Gamescom 2022, the developers clarified that it would be more akin to something like Horizon or God of War, taking place in a semi open world environment. At the same time, they outlined the inner workings of the combat system.
Design Director Jérémy Hartvick: While keeping a visceral feel as well as certain moves which were core to The Surge series, Atlas Fallen’s combat is primarily defined by speed and fluidity. We’ve kept ideas like the body part targeting system and the implant system, using a different approach to best support the accentuated RPG aspect. We pushed everything a step further in the direction of advanced character management and moveset customization, so you’ll get to approach combat in your own way. Game feel is our main concern when it comes to designing Atlas Fallen. We’ve let strict constraints of realism aside to focus on giving a thrilling, overpowering feeling to the game. One of the chief design elements to achieve this is Sand Gliding, which is how the hero will move across the vast world of Atlas Fallen. It’s key to the game’s high mobility system, and it brings amazing speed and verticality to the spectacular action of combats.
Indeed, many abilities will be powered by sand, giving fuel to what Deck13 described as ‘super-powered combat’ that culminates in the Momentum bar which, when filled, enables devastating skills and extra damage. Players will be able to employ a variety of shape-shifting weapons to hunt mythic monsters and discover the secrets of a mysterious land. They will be able to do so with the help of a friend since Atlas Fallen supports two-player co-op, a first for the studio.
Atlas Fallen will be released on May 16th for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. It will be priced at $59.99 ($49.99 on PC), so a bit lower than the new standard of $69.99 games. Pre-orders are already open, granting the Ruin Rising Pack (a mix of skins and essence stones) to customers.
