Yesterday, publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Mundfish announced the second DLC for Atomic Heart. Titled Trapped in Limbo, it’ll pick up right after the campaign’s conclusion, but it will do so based on a different ending than that continued by the previous DLC (Annihilation Instinct).
Trapped in Limbo introduces new sections of the twisted Limbo world, featuring fan-favorite challenges with a unique Limbo flavor. While exploring the new gameplay, players will help Atomic Heart protagonist P-3 overcome a series of dizzying obstacles, uncover the secrets of his past and the world of Limbo, and defeat uniquely designed opponents with stunning weapons in an exciting combat extravaganza. To ascend from Limbo’s depths and free P-3’s mind from his demons, players must do everything possible to overcome the altered game rules. The Trapped in Limbo DLC is crucial in uncovering Major P-3’s fate, and it will be up to players to unravel what happens to P3 while surviving in this mysterious world based on inverted logic.
The Trapped in Limbo DLC sounds inspired by platform games, chiefly Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise. While navigating the platforms by jumping, running, sliding, and fighting, players can collect apples to unlock skills and weapons, as well as gold coins to access up to 7 unique skins for the main campaign of Atomic Heart.
Launched in February after several years of development, the game turned out to be a commercial success. Atomic Heart registered over 5 million players in the first three weeks, outperforming the expectations of publisher Focus Home Interactive.
In my review, I rated the game 7.5 out of 10:
Atomic Heart is a solid debut for a brand-new developer. Mundfish succeeded in following the example of BioShock to deliver an engaging first-person shooter that is fun to play (minus a few quirks), runs extremely well, and looks great. That said, the story is a letdown and should have been fleshed out more, just like the side content.
The Trapped in Limbo DLC will be included with the Atomic Pass, which owners of the Gold and Premium Edition already possess. Likely, it will also be available for separate purchase like Annihilation Instinct, which is normally priced at $10. However, Atomic Heart and its various editions and DLCs are currently discounted on all platforms.
