Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is here, and the Massive-Entertainment-developed game is surprisingly complex, offering a huge open world, survival mechanics, crafting system, combat, and more. It can all be a lot to take in at first, but we’re here to help.
One of the keys to building up your character in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is finding the best-quality crafting materials. The best gear and weapons in the game are crafted, and while you’ll find various crafting recipes with different bonuses and potentials, the actual strength of that gear is determined by the quality of the crafting materials you use to make them. Even early-game crafting recipes can be used to make powerful gear if you have the best ingredients. You’re going to want to track down “Superior” and “Exquisite” crafting materials, and collect them in the right way, if you want make the best stuff. It can be baffling to navigate at first, but don’t worry, we have a few tips for becoming a master crafter…
Finding Superior and Exquisite materials
Crafting materials come in three grades – Fine, Superior, and Exquisite. You can find out what rarity a material is by scanning it with your Na’vi senses before you pick it. Fine materials will have a green outline, Superior will be purple, and Exquisite will be gold. In the case of materials acquired from animals, you’re going to want to find “Adult” and “Mature” creatures to hunt – these will give you Superior and Exquisite materials, respectively.
That’s all fine and good, but where do you find these Superior and Exquisite materials? To do that, you’re going want to head into your Hunter’s Guide and check the listing for the specific material you’re looking for (you add a listing by scanning any version of that material). The page should tell you where you can “commonly” find the material, as well as a more specific location where you can find “rarer” versions of the material. That’s where you need to go if you want to have any hope of finding a Superior or Exquisite specimen. Use the Hunter’s Guide to track that specific material or animal, which will highlight it more clearly on the screen or provide a trail you can follow if it’s something you gather via hunting, then try to find the specific area the “rarer” variants can be found.
Collecting Superior and Exquisite materials the right way
Finding Superior or Exquisite materials is all about location, but the way you collect them can confer extra bonuses. In the case of plant-based materials, you want them to be “pristine” by pulling off the gathering minigame correctly (hold the right trigger gently and find the right angle before plucking) and collecting them during optimal conditions (rain, sunlight, day, night, ect.) Doing both these things won’t get you a higher-rarity material. A Fine material won’t, for example, become Superior because you pick it correctly during the proper conditions. That said, you can boost the quality of a Superior or Exquisite material by getting both the bonuses. Note: You can set the difficulty of the gathering minigame in the options if you don’t want to worry about damaging your materials.
In the case of hunting-based materials, You want to get clean kills (by only hitting an animal’s weak spot) and merciful kills (by killing an animal with a minimum number of shots – ideally one-shotting them). Here are some more tips on hunting.
Advance the “Memories of the Hunter” skill tree for best hunting results
In addition to the hunting tips linked above, there are a number of abilities you can get by advancing through the “Memories of the Hunter” skill tree that will make pulling off clean, merciful kills easier.
Spend a little Clan Favor if you have to
If you’re having trouble finding good ingredients for a crafting recipe, be aware that a lot of Na’vi merchants will sell you Superior or better quality ingredients in exchange for “Clan Favor” (here’s how the Clan Favor system works). Unlock the “Renowned Crafter” skill from the Memories of the Maker tree and the merchants will offer you better-quality materials.
And there you have it. Hopefully, the whole crafting thing is a bit less perplexing now and you’re on the way to crafting yourself some badass gear.
