Twitter is now accepting applications in the US to join test groups for its Super Follows (iOS only) and Ticketed Spaces (iOS and Android) .
“Twitter is where people go to have real conversations about what’s happening,” product managers Esther Crawford and Ellen Havlicek wrote in a blog announcement. “It’s a place where people can express themselves authentically and share their unfiltered thoughts in the moment,” they continued. “We’re working on ways for people driving those conversations to earn money from audience support and engage their followers in a new way.”
Introduced in December to a handful of iPhone owners and expanded to Android beta testers in March, Twitter’s Clubhouse competitor Spaces is “focused on the intimacy of the human voice,” and allows people more than 280 characters to engage.
Add ticketing to the mix, and folks can start earning money from their exclusive live audio experiences. Customize each event by setting the price (charge $1 or $999) and size (invite five people or 100), in an effort to “create deeper bonds with your followers in an intimate setting,” according to a company blog announcement. You can even remind attendees about your Space via push and in-app notifications sent directly to their devices, or with details posted to your feed.
To find out if you meet the minimum eligibility criteria, visit Menu > Monetization > Ticketed Spaces. There you can learn more about how to “get paid for doing what you love,” and check your eligibility. Users must have at least 1,000 followers, have hosted at least three Spaces in the past 30 days, and be at least 18 years old to apply.
“At Twitter we want to help people make money, and give them tools they can use to be rewarded for their work and feel supported by their audience,” Twitter Media said in a Tuesday thread. “Voices like yours drive the conversation on Twitter, and we’re committed to supporting you where your biggest supporters are.”
Super Follows was a feature unveiled in February as yet another way to earn money by tweeting. The account subscription service lets users charge followers for monthly access to exclusive content—a la Patreon. Anyone can use Super Follows to build relationships with fans and offer bonus content and interactions—unscripted thoughts, ideas, opinions; personal replies; etc.—for $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 per month.
Similar to the Ticketed Spaces criteria, users must be 18 years or older, have at least 10,000 followers, and have tweeted at least 25 times in the past 30 days. Those who meet the requirements and get approved can look for a notification in the Twitter app and an accompanying email. Eligible users can earn up to 97% of the revenue on ticket sales after platform fees are deducted by Apple and Google for in-app purchase sales. Until you reach $50,000 in lifetime earnings across all Twitter monetization products, at which point the amount drops to 80% after in-app purchase fees.
