Breaking Bad Creator’s Next Show Is Sci-Fi, Won’t Focus On Anti-Hero

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan has teased more information about his next TV show. As previously rumored, Gilligan’s next show will not be set in the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe, and will instead be a sci-fi show set in a new world.

He confirmed this, and more, in an appearance on the Rich Eisen show. Gilligan also confirmed that his next project, which he is now pitching to studios, will not focus on an anti-hero like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul did.

“It centers more on someone who has got some issues, some rough edges, but is essentially trying to be heroic. I’m being a little coy,” Gilligan said.

Asked straight-up if the new series would be a sci-fi project, as was rumored, Gilligan said this is essentially true. “To me, it’s more allegorical, but yeah, it’d be safe to say it’s science fiction,” he said.

That’s all Gilligan had to say on the new series. Whatever the show is, it’ll hail from Sony Pictures TV, which is paying Gilligan $10 million or more to stay with the company after the success of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

A previous report said Gilligan’s new show will be more akin to the type of work he did on The X-Files years ago. The new show will reportedly focus on “the human condition.”

It’s been described as a “blended, grounded drama” similar to The Twilight Zone. It will reportedly be set on Earth while “putting a tweak on it” in an “unexpected, surprising way.”

As for additional Breaking Bad universe spinoffs, Gilligan said he has a “never say never” attitude, but as of now, he has “not a scintilla of plans” to do anything else with the Breaking Bad world.

However, Gilligan joked that he might return to the Breaking Bad universe “If i get my ass handed to me with this new show.”

Breaking Bad wrapped up its five-season run in 2013, with Better Call Saul coming to an end after six seasons earlier this month.
