Two years ago, Lego released easily one of its best collectibles in the form of a fully functioning Optimus Prime, and this year, the Autobot leader is being joined by his favorite scout, Bumblebee. Much like the Optimus Prime set, Bumblebee’s design that’s incredibly faithful to his G1 origins. Priced at $90, Bumblebee is now available to purchase for Lego Insiders (free rewards program) and will be available for everyone on July 4.
While he is smaller than the Autobot commander–which actually makes him scale nicely when placed next to Optimus–Bumblebee still looks like a fun bot to build. There are 950 pieces in total, and when fully constructed, he’ll stand tall in robot mode.
You can equip him with a blaster, he has individually articulating fingers, and he comes with a selection of stickers to place on his license and vanity plates. You’ll also get a small plaque to display next to Bumblebee, and while his firepower stats aren’t much, he’s at the top of the leaderboards when it comes to courage.
Just like Optimus, Bumblebee can also be transformed into a vehicle vaguely resembling a Volkswagen Beetle. You will have to remove his windshield when switching from vehicle to robot mode, but it can be changed into his jetpack.
In case you haven’t grabbed it yet, the Lego Optimus Prime set is currently on sale at Amazon for $144 (was $180). It’s a much bigger bot to build, but the entire process is a ton of fun and the end result is impressive.
