Developer CD Projekt Red can’t seem to catch a break with Cyberpunk 2077. After a dismal launch, and ongoing bug and stability issues, we finally got some good news last week in the form of official support for game mods. However, it turns out mods now form a serious security risk for PC gamers.
As Kotaku reports, CD Projekt tweeted a warning out yesterday to owners of the PC version of the game. The key bit of the tweet reads, “We’ve been made aware of a vulnerability in external DLL files the game uses which can be used to execute code on PCs.”
Work is underway to create and issue a fix for the exploit, but for now using mods from an unknown/untrusted source is not advised. If you install a malicious mod, then a hacker could potentially take control of your PC. In other words, it’s simply not worth taking the risk until CD Projekt patches out the vulnerability.
There is some good news for Cyberpunk 2077 owners, though. The game breaking bug introduced with Patch 1.1 was solved with a hotfix and official mod support does mean we should see some entertaining tweaks to the game soon.
