Beloved actor Chadwick Boseman, who brought the character of King T’Challa to life in Black Panther, passed away on Aug. 28. News of his death shocked many fans and led to the most liked tweet in Twitter’s history.
The tweet (posted to Boseman’s account) confirms, with “immeasurable sadness,” the actor’s passing from colon cancer, which he had battled for the past four years.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”
The tweet has so far amassed 7.4 million likes, nearly double the amount of likes for the previously most-liked tweet (a 2017 tweet by Barack Obama, which has 4.3 million likes).
Twitter users expressed dismay and sadness over Boseman’s passing.
Boseman was honored at this weekend’s 2020 VMAs. “We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many. He is a true hero, not just on screen but in everything he did. His impact lives forever,” Keke Palmer said at the start of the show.
