- Series Entertainment acquired Pixelberry Games to “deliver a diverse catalogue”
- Pixelberry is best known for making mobile games where story and customisation take centre stage
High School Story creator Pixelberry Games has been acquired by AI games developer Series Entertainment for an undisclosed sum.
The deal marks the latest move in the latter’s mission to “deliver a diverse catalogue of different genres” while leveraging its AI-driven tool called Rho Engine. The tech aims to automate many aspects of game development as a multi-modal, full-stack platform for games development.
Plenty of choices
Pixelberry was acquired by Nexon in 2017 and is best known for making mobile games where story and customisation take centre stage, with Choices: Stories You Play a huge hit in the interactive storytelling genre. According to AppMagic data, the romantic adventure game has generated $544 million to date with over 100 million downloads.
Series Entertainment CEO Pany Haritatos implied that through the deal to buy Pixelberry off Nexon, new chapters in Choices: Stories You Play will begin to be made with AI technology – delivering on many fan requests from story branches to multiple love interests.
“Pixelberry has been a category leader in the interactive fiction genre,” Haritatos said.
“We love story-based games and Choices has long been a leader in the genre. With our cutting-edge technology, we will be able to take Choices to the next level, with bigger books, new interactive features, and ever-improving story quality, all designed to deliver the things the Choices community wants.”
Meanwhile, the Pixelberry team expressed excitement surrounding the acquisition and access to the new tech:
“We are happy to announce that our studio is now part of Series Entertainment, a fast-growing game development company. It is an exciting new chapter for our studio and we look forward to empowering our creative teams through the Series Entertainment technology, which will allow us to bring to life a lot of our top fan requests, such as genre diversity, multiple love interests, main character customisation and more intricate story branches.
“We thank all of our fans for your support and we can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for our stories with heart.”
Speaking on the world of AI, Nintendo just revealed its preference for “decades of know-how” rather than relying on new technology.
