Co-development studio Kokku has laid off seven staff at its Portugal office following an operational review at the branch.
A spokesperson for parent company OV Entertainment Group told PocketGamer.biz the move was made to put the studio in line with the firm’s overall strategic goals, “as well as support structured and scalable growth”.
The office will continue to operate moving forward and the changes were not said to have impacted Kokku’s Brazil studios.
The company was acquired by newly formed UK-based multimedia firm OV Entertainment Group earlier this year. At the time, it was said to employ 170 staff. The team has worked across platforms with companies including Activision, Codemasters, EA, Netflix and others.
Operational review
“It is true that Kokku recently conducted an operational review of our Portugal studio to ensure alignment with our strategic goals as well as support structured and scalable growth,” read a statement.
“As part of this process, we carefully evaluated the studio’s operational needs, resulting in adjustments aimed at optimising resources and ensuring long-term sustainability.
“Regrettably, these changes have resulted in a re-alignment of job profiles and the departure of seven employees. This decision was made after thorough consideration to align the studio with our global strategy. To ensure transparency, the leadership held an all-hands meeting with the entire company, including a Q&A session, to address any questions and provide transparency.
“I want to emphasise that the studio in Portugal continues to operate as usual, and these changes will not affect our Brazilian studios. Kokku remains committed to delivering high-quality projects and innovation while continuing to invest in sustainable growth for our employees, clients, and partners.
“We appreciate the understanding and support as we move forward with these adjustments.”
