The latest rumour about this autumn’s new iPhone 12 models is that we will see new colours, including a dark blue variant.
We should stress that this is new evidence rather than an entirely new theory: pundits have been suggesting for months that the midnight green colour option from the iPhone 11 Pro will be replaced by navy blue. As early as January 2020 the YouTube channel EverythingApplePro was pushing the navy-blue theory, based on information from the leaker Max Weinbach.
But until now we’ve not had much reason to believe this theory was any more accurate than the similar claims that light blue, purple and orange were also on the cards.
Now, however, the dark-blue model is specifically mentioned in a report from DigiTimes, which predicts that Apple will manufacture between 63 and 68 million units of the new mobile phones this year. (That is roughly 5 million fewer units than were manufactured at the launch of the iPhone 11, which is due to the ongoing pandemic.)
With every new iPhone, Apple relies on external features to distinguish it from previous models: the iPhone 11 Pro, for example, has a camera module design all of its own, as did the iPhone X. But the company also likes to use colour options as a badge of newness.
With the iPhone 6, for example, it was gold, the iPhone 6s got rose gold, and the iPhone 7 got separate matte and jet black finishes. The dark blue finish will probably remain a unique selling point of the iPhone 11 Pro.
