Just like many other online multiplayer games, Bungie is constantly fighting a battle to stop players cheating in Destiny 2 in order to gain an advantage. However, the developer’s latest anti-cheat solution is set to have a negative impact on the performance of the game.
In the latest Destiny 2 Security Update, Bungie has revealed it’s adding the BattleEye anti-cheat software to the game as part of update 3.3.0. BattleEye actually runs alongside the game and uses “sophisticated detection routines” for on-the-fly monitoring and protection. It can also automatically ban players found to be cheating, but Bungie isn’t turning that feature on yet as it wants to test accuracy at scale first. Automatic banning will be enabled before the Trials of Osiris PvP content goes live on Sept. 10, though.
While less cheating is good news for all Destiny 2 players, the bad news is it comes with a noticeable performance hit. As Bungie explains, “Anti-cheat solutions require some additional system resources to keep watch and you may see some reduction in frames and performance after Update 3.3.0 goes live. The new service will also increase the initial startup of the game.”
This shouldn’t be of great concern if you have a high-performance gaming rig on which to play the game, but if your PC or laptop only just makes the grade, this could be enough of a performance hit to ruin the experience, but also the perfect excuse to upgrade.
