Dragon’s Dogma 2 could never run at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S due to their slow CPUs, but a 30 FPS cap is achievable with some tweaks to the game’s only display mode.
Commenting on the ResetERA forums, Digital Foundry’s Alexander Battaglia said that the drops to 25 FPS seen in the new footage shared online yesterday suggest the drops are caused by the game’s 4K checkerboard resolution and not by CPU limitations. By reducing the resolution to 1440p, an optional 30 FPS cap should be possible to achieve a more consistent framerate. Additionally, 60 FPS could not be achieved on consoles due to their slow CPUs.
Digital Foundry’s John Linneman also commented on Dragon’s Dogma 2’s performance on console, saying that an optional 30 FPS cap should be included, as the unlocked framerate leads to poor frame pacing, which can only be salvaged by the Xbox Series X|S VRR. On PlayStation 5, the issue will be more critical, and the cap would help stabilize the experience, given how the game often runs at above 30 FPS, though not by much.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 target framerate on consoles has been the topic of heated discussion in the past few weeks until Director Hideaki Itsuno confirmed the game would run at uncapped framerate. Yesterday, he further elaborated on the matter, saying that they were aiming to go at around or higher than 30 FPS and essentially confirming there will be only a single display mode on consoles.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on March 22nd.
