Dream Games lands CVC investment and Pokémon TGC Pocket nears $1bn | Week in Views

The games industry moves quickly and while stories may come and go there are some that we just can’t let go of…

So, to give those particularly thorny topics a further going over we’ve created a weekly digest where the members of the PocketGamer.biz team share their thoughts and go that little bit deeper on some of the more interesting things that have happened in mobile gaming in the past week.

Dream Games secures strategic investment from CVC as sole equity partner

Dream Games has landed a huge investment from CVC as they bought out the previous VC investors and now stand as the sole equity partner. This takes Dream Games’ valuation to almost $5 billion, which is pretty good going for a studio that has been around since 2019. 

Royal Match alone has been a great hit for the team, bringing in over a billion just last year alone and then they followed that up with the release of Royal Kingdom, which made almost $2.4 million in gross player spending in just its first 14 days after the global launch, figures like that certainly make Dream Games appealing to back. 

While CVC is coming in with significant backing, Dream Games founders remain in control, and it appears that it is business as usual for the studio, but now they have more resources to scale.

So, I’m curious to see what that amounts to. Clearly, it means more support for their existing games, but perhaps we’ll be seeing another game from them in the not too distant future. 

Overall, this seems like a win for both parties.

Pokémon TCG Pocket usurps Pokémon Go launch as it closes in on $1bn after six months

Somehow, it’s already been six whole months since The Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc. and DeNA launched Pokémon TCG Pocket – and what a six months it’s been.

For those uninitiated, TCG Pocket is the latest Pokémon mobile game and quickly established itself as one of the franchise’s biggest on the platform. It was second only to Go in month-one revenue and has managed to maintain momentum with expansion packs reliably releasing each month.

The sixth expansion pack just launched in tandem with the six months milestone, and the dev team have added some limited-time quests to get players battling as well as collecting in-game.

And hitting the six month mark, now is an ideal opportunity to reflect on Pocket’s performance thus far – and to compare with its mobile predecessor.

Well, frankly, there’s very little competition. Pokémon TCG Pocket has made an enormous $915 million in its first half-year, beating most of the series’ mobile games 15 times over or more. And, yes, it’s even outearned the once-untouchable Pokémon Go.

The $1 billion mark doesn’t look so far away now…
