An as yet unknown EA employee has been accused of selling extremely rare FIFA 21 Ultimate Team cards for thousands of dollars. The so-called “EAGate” scandal is currently under investigation by the publisher.
EA not only makes a lot of money selling copies of FIFA 21, but it continues to generate additional revenue from sales of Ultimate Teams loot boxes. These boxes contains cards, some of which are for extremely rare and highly-desirable Icon and Team of the Year players. Some gamers would be willing to pay huge sums of money to guarantee unlocking these players, and it looks as though an EA employee is taking advantage of that fact.
As IGN reports, screenshots of a chat have been shared via Twitter involving what’s thought to be an EA employee and a FIFA 21 player. The player is attempting to purchase some of these rare cards, which the seller says can be done simply with a PSN and EA ID number. There’s also the small matter of payment, which comes to 1,000 euros ($1,193) in return for three Icon and two Team of the Year cards.
EA responded to the allegations by launching an investigation and posting the following message on the EA Sports FIFA Twitter account. “We are aware of the allegations currently circulating within our community related to FIFA 21 Ultimate Team items. A thorough investigation is underway, and if we identify improper conduct, we will take swift action. We want to be clear – this type of behavior is unacceptable, and we in no way condone what is alleged to have happened here. We understand how this creates concern about unfair balance in the game and competition. We will update the community as we get more clarity on the situation.”
