Eufy’s Solo IndoorCam C24 ($39.99) is a reasonably priced home security camera that doesn’t skimp on features. For under $40, you get 2K video capture, intelligent motion detection, and both local and cloud video storage. It also works with the Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant platforms, although some features aren’t available in HomeKit. It’s a good performer and easy to install, and all of this makes it a strong value for a high-res indoor security camera. That said, if you can part with an extra $12, the Eufy Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt offers the same 2K resolution and interoperability as well as a few additional features, earning it our Editors’ Choice award.
A Simple Design With Lots Inside
The C24 looks very similar to the TP-Link Kasa Spot KC400. The white enclosure measures 2.2 by 2.2 by 1.3 inches (HWD) and has a black camera face. It sits atop a square base that brings the total height up to 4 inches. The base provides tilt and swivel adjustability and can be placed on a flat surface or mounted on a wall. The back panel holds a mini USB power port, a sync button, and a speaker, and there’s a microSD card slot on the right side. You’ll have to supply your own SD card (up to 128GB) to store recorded video locally.
The camera captures 2K video and has a 105-degree field of view. It uses eight infrared LEDs for up to 32 feet of black-and-white night vision, and has an embedded microphone for two-way audio and a small LED status indicator. The LED flashes blue during setup, is solid blue when everything is working properly, flashes red slowly when disconnected from the internet, blinks red once when sound or motion is detected, and is solid red when the camera is recording an event.
The C24 will send push alerts and record video when motion or sound is detected, and it knows the difference between motion caused by people, pets, and other disturbances. It also has a setting that triggers an alert when it detects the sound of a baby crying. The camera will store video locally on a microSD card or on a NAS drive, or you can subscribe to a Eufy storage plan to have it store video in the cloud. For $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, the Basic plan offers 30 days of video storage for one camera. The Premier plan goes for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and gives you 30 days of video history for up to ten cameras
As is the case with the Eufy Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt camera, the C24 supports Apple HomeKit and Siri voice commands, but certain features aren’t available when using HomeKit including activity zones, pet commands, and sound detection. Most importantly, video streaming and recording is limited to 1080p in both the Eufy app and the Apple Home app. The C24 also supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands and works with routines for both platforms, but it doesn’t support IFTTT applets that allow it to interact with scores of third-party devices.
The C24 uses the same Eufy Security app (for Android and iOS) as other Eufy cameras. It appears on the Devices screen with a still image of the last captured motion event and a play arrow. Tap the arrow to launch a live stream with buttons along the bottom for manual recording, taking a screenshot, initiating two-way talk, sounding the internal siren, and muting the sound. Turning your phone sideways lets you view the stream in full-screen mode.
Tapping the gear icon in the upper right corner takes you to the Camera Settings screen. Here you can turn the camera on and off, enable auto night vision, configure motion and sound detection settings (including person and pet detection), choose a video quality setting for streaming and recording, enable notifications, and enable continuous recording if you have a microSD card installed. There’s also a Pet Command feature that will play a recording when the camera detects a pet. You can use the included “Hey, what are you doing there,” response or create your own custom recording using your voice.
Installing and Using the Eufy Solo IndoorCam C24
You have to download the mobile app and create an account to install the C24, but once that’s done installation is quick and easy. I opened the app, tapped Add Device on the Devices screen, and selected IndoorCam from the list. I plugged the camera in and when the LED turned solid blue, I tapped Next and scanned the QR code on the base using my phone’s camera. I held the sync button for two seconds until I heard a beep, verified the beep, and selected my Wi-Fi SSID from the list of nearby networks. I entered my Wi-Fi password and after a few seconds the camera was connected. I gave it a name, formatted an SD card that I had installed, updated the firmware, and the installation was complete.
The C24 delivered sharp 2K video in testing. Daytime colors appeared rich and saturated, and nighttime black-and-white imagery showed balanced contrast with good illumination. There was a touch of barrel distortion around the edges, but the flaw is minor and barely noticeable.
Motion and sound alerts arrived instantly, as did recorded video using the microSD card slot. Intelligent motion detection worked well for filtering out motion events from all but people and pets. The crying baby sound filter also worked as intended.
Recorded event video looked just as sharp as the live feed, and two-way audio was clean and adequately loud. I had no trouble viewing video from the camera on an Amazon Echo Show using voice commands, and my Alexa routine to turn on a Wyze Bulb when the camera detected motion worked without a hitch.
Ultra-Affordable 2K Security
At $39.99, the Eufy Solo IndoorCam C24 replaces the $44.99 TP-Link Kasa Spot 24/7 Recording (KC400) as the most affordable 2K indoor security camera we’ve tested. It delivered highly detailed video in testing and worked well with Alexa voice commands and routines, and its intelligent motion and sound detection features were just as seamless.
