It’s been four years since Rare first announced Everwild at the X019 event. The game debuted with a visually stunning teaser trailer, enticing Rare fans with its art style and with the promise of an ‘experience that allows for new ways to play in a natural and magical world’.
However, it became rapidly clear that Everwild was very far from release. A few months later, studio head Craig Duncan admitted that the development team was still very much brainstorming ideas of what it could become.
I think with Everwild, Louise O’Connor and her leadership team are really passionate about giving players a world that they can just lose themselves in — you know, a lot of nature feels magical. So the notion of, ‘What does it mean to nurture a world? What does it mean to be in nature?’ Part of the reason we haven’t talked a lot about Everwild is because we’re still feeling a lot of these things out. We’re still playing around with gameplay ideas. We’ll have plenty to say in the future on that, but … we have an idea we feel really passionate about, and we think there’s something special. I have a team of people that wake up every morning with the desire to make this game that they’re really, really passionate about.
The following year, though, a credible report from VGC revealed that development on Everwild had basically restarted, with a targeted launch window of 2024. In late 2021, Jeff Grubb said he heard folks working on the game still hadn’t figured out what it would be.
A glimmer of hope comes now in the form of a job ad for a Video Producer. The listing specifically mentions creating video content for Everwild, in addition to Rare’s ongoing live service game Sea of Thieves. Creating such promotional content usually doesn’t happen until a game has reached a stage where it can be shown, usually within a couple of years from its release at the most.
While far from conclusive proof, it appears that Rare is preparing to show more of Everwild in the foreseeable future. Stay tuned on Wccftech for all the latest updates on this mysterious title.
