Game developer and publisher Ubisoft employs 19,000 people, and all of them were forced to reset their passwords over the weekend due to a “cyber security incident.”
In a news post, Ubisoft confirmed that during the first week of March, the company suffered a cyber attack which “caused temporary disruption to some of our games, systems, and services.” It’s unclear exactly what happened, and Ubisoft is currently working with “external experts” as part of an ongoing investigation to figure out the extent and method of the breach.
Ubisoft’s IT teams decided resetting all employee passwords is worth the hassle as a precautionary measure, although it could take some time considering just how many employees there are. The good news is, the attack did not access player personal information.
As The Verge reports, the LAPSUS$ hacking group seems to be claiming responsibility for this breach, although so far that confirmation is simply a smirking emoji face and no real proof. The same group hacked Nvidia last month, claiming to have grabbed 1TB of data and then proceeded to leak parts of it. After that, LAPSUS$ turned its attention to hacking Samsung and subsequently leaked 190GB of data. We now wait to see if Ubisoft data starts leaking.
