Facebook Instant Games finally has in-app purchases enabled for titles on iOS.
Apple’s App Store rules meant that, for years, Meta could not enable microtransactions for developers on the Instant Games available through the Facebook app.
But as of September 1th, functionallity is now supported within the native Facebook iOS app.
Meta said that in-app purchases are now supported on web, iOS and Android devices. Developers who are interested in enabling IAP in their products can get a detailed tutorial here.
A new beginning
Softgames CEO and co-founder Alexander Krug said this was a “game-changer” for developers in the Instant Games space. It opens up the opportunity to engage and reward players in new ways, create more complex games on the platform, and increase their reach, he said.
“With Apple now allowing IAP on iOS for Instant Games, developers can finally offer microtransactions directly within their games – unlocking a major revenue stream that was previously exclusive to native apps,” said Krug.
He added: “This is just the beginning, and it could reshape the gaming landscape as we know it. The line between native apps and Instant Games is officially starting to blur.”
