According to a new report from Fast Company, this autumn’s new models of iPhone will all support 5G, but only the iPhone 12 Pro Max will support the super-fast variant called millimetre wave. This is because of the technology’s very high power draw; only the top model has a sufficiently capacious battery.
In addition, support for millimetre wave 5G will be limited to three countries: the US, Japan and South Korea. In other words, in the UK we will have to make do with the slower sub-6GHz version.
In related news, last week the respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that he expects Apple to initially manufacture a limited number of handsets with millimetre wave. He predicted between 4 and 6 million units to be made this year, and 25-50 million in 2021.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max and all its smaller siblings are expected to launch in October. Catch up on the latest leaks in our iPhone 12 news hub. If you can’t wait that long, browse our guide to the best iPhone deals.
