The Gamathon 24 video game convention by Africacomicade has kicked off with an exclusive launch and press conference for game developers and delegates across Africa.
Backed by tech giant HP, this six-day event looks to be a landmark occasion for the African games industry, featuring a wide range of panel sessions and showcases in XR, art, and animation.
The press conference, held at the Africacomicade office in Lagos, Nigeria, not only served as the official launch but also paved a clear roadmap for what attendees can expect throughout the week.
Setting the stage for innovation and growth
Building on the success of last year’s edition, which saw over 3,000 participants and five game studios raise $200,000 in funding, Gamathon 24 continues to grow as a platform for innovation, networking, and investment.
One of the highlights of the opening session was a discussion on the evolving role of African studios in the global gaming scene.
Despite the recent layoffs that have shaken the games industry, African studios are emerging as strong players, with more roles opening up for game developers, artists, and designers.
A sector for all
Speaking during the press conference, Africacomicade co-founder Oscar Micheal Esio emphasised the collaborative nature of the African games industry, stating, “It’s not a sector for one, but a business for all” as the convention aims to foster a sense of community and shared growth among game developers, investors, and players alike.
Day one also brought together various game developers in the region, including Nigeria’s Deluxe Creation Studios’ Edu Shola, Ethiopia’s Enechawet Games‘ Abiy Hailu, Rwanda’s Huuza Games founder Grace Iradukunda, France-based Ingwas Studios co-founder Mélissandre Monatus and many others.
In addition to the sessions, showcases, developer workshops, and gaming competitions lined up for the next five days, the organisers also teased a “special announcement” from Google this Friday.
We’ll be in attendance all week to keep you updated on the very latest from Gamathon 24.
