Game Freak hack exposes employee information and source code in major security breach

Pokémon developer Game Freak has confirmed that its servers were hacked, resulting in a significant data leak. 

According to Game World Observer, the bad actor leaked various data, including personal information and company files related to both existing and upcoming games. 

Game Freak also released a statement (written in Japanese) confirming the hack and noting that over 2,600 items containing the names and email addresses of current, former and contract employees were accessed. 

Preventing a future breach 

The Japanese company went on to say that it would individually contact those affected and strengthen its security measures to prevent future hacks. 

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved,” it wrote. 

Leaked data from the hack includes source code and beta builds for games like HeartGold/SoulSilver and Black 2/White 2. 

Eurogamer also reports that the leak revealed details about cancelled and unannounced Pokémon projects, such as a Splatoon-like multiplayer game. It also revealed information on “Ounce,” the codename for the Nintendo Switch 2, along with concept art, sprites, and other assets.
