Narrative game studio Glow Up Games is shutting down.
The studio behind The Insecure: The Come Up Game said on its website that it is unable to continue overcoming ongoing challenges despite years of effort.
Co-founder Mitu Khandaker also took to LinkedIn to share that the studio was “not able to continue weathering the challenges we fought so hard to overcome for all these years.”
“Our mission was to build games & tech which centres and celebrates black and brown joy, and we were proud of what we were able to achieve, and of whatever small impact we were able to have.”
“We celebrated so many firsts, such as being the first all-woman of colour founded studio in the mobile space to raise over $1M in equity funding; but that also shows how real the gap always was. We’re grateful for those who are continuing that important & necessary work,” she said.
Founding vision
Glow Up Games was founded in 2019 by CEO Mitu Khandaker and chief experience officer Latoya Peterson, who share a passion for creating games that reflect underrepresented voices, particularly black and brown communities.
The studio aimed to build authentic and inclusive game experiences, partnering with IPs like HBO to make Insecure: The Come Up Game, which is the studio’s sole title.
