A collaboration is currently underway between Shift Up’s shooter RPG Goddess of Victory: Nikke and the popular anime series Evangelion, bringing various fan-favourite characters to the game beginning with Asuka Langley Soryu.
Nikke’s daily revenue quickly surged with the launch of this limited-time event’s first phase, as players eagerly spent on its gacha to add Asuka to their ranks.
According to AppMagic data, the collab generated $1.35 million in gross revenue on mobile on its launch day, August 22nd, up from $767,000 on August 21st.
This rise sustained into August 23rd when another $1.31 million was generated from players, before slowly declining in the days following the banner – a trend common across gacha games.
With Asuka’s debut almost doubling player spending over the day prior, Goddess of Victory: Nikke also shot up Apple’s App Store sales chart in Japan, landing in third place behind Bandai Namco’s One Piece Bounty Rush and HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail. According to gamebiz, this was a rise from 18th place the day before the crossover.
The power of collaboration
With Goddess of Victory: Nikke known for its revealing costume and sexualised characters, a collaboration with Evangelion offers an opportunity to bring even more anime characters in titillating attire, this time bringing a pre-established audience with them.
The event is taking place in phases, beginning with Asuka’s introduction, with plans to add more characters and content later this week and again in September. This is likely a strategy to overcome those declining revenues in the days following a new update, spreading out spending rather than giving players all the content upfront.
As Nikke’s fourth collab with an external IP, Shift Up has an increasing amount of experience in crossovers with its game, including a thorough Dave the Diver collab in July, recreating the PC game within Nikke.
The Evangelion event, meanwhile, features characters, outfits and artwork from the franchise, as well as a new story event. Every character also possesses their own special weapon.
Further pointing to the advantages of leveraging known anime characters, AppMagic data indicates that 58% of lifetime player spending in Goddess of Victory: Nikke has come from players in Japan, approaching $500 million from this one region alone.
Worldwide, the title generated $750 million by its 1.5-year anniversary, and has at times brushed up against Genshin Impact as a contender for the highest-earning gacha game of a given month.
