Google Chrome is getting a new logo, and even though it looks an awful lot like the old logo at first glance, its designer has offered a behind-the-scenes look at some of its subtle changes.
Google designer Elvin Hu says the new logo shipped with a new build of Chrome Canary—an experimental version of the browser primarily intended for developers—on Feb. 4.
It can be hard to spot the differences between these logos even in Hu’s side-by-side comparison. Luckily the designer explained what Google changed and why in a series of followup tweets.
Google also customized the icon for various platforms (Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, etc.). “We want the icons to feel recognizably Chrome,” Hu says, “but also well crafted for each OS.”
Hu says that Chrome’s new logo will also start to appear throughout the browser, on the web, and other places “in the next few months.” Let’s see how many Chrome users notice.
