In web searches, as in life, results aren’t always what you’d hoped for. No one knows this better than Google, which uses various systems to detect misspellings, provide predictions, and try to understand underlying intentions. But even algorithms can fail, or sometimes there just isn’t enough information available.
Google is this week rolling out a new notification acknowledging when it hasn’t been able to find a match for your query. When possible, the feature will provide alternative searches, as well as tips for reformulating your query to ensure a better outcome. “While you can still go through the results to see for yourself if they’re helpful, the message is a signal that we probably haven’t found what you’re looking for,” Product Manager Elizabeth Tucker wrote in a blog announcement.
Google doesn’t expect the notification—available first to U.S. iPhone users—to appear very often. “After all, there’s usually something helpful we can find,” according to Tucker. “But when it does, we hope it helps save you some time and gets you to the information you wanted more quickly.”
If all else fails, and it turns out you’re searching for something that doesn’t actually exist on the internet, just be patient. “You can always check back later to see if anyone has created a new article or posted new information that you’ll find helpful,” Tucker suggested.
There is no word on if or when the feature will reach Android devices and/or desktop browsers. Google did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment.
