There have been so many rumours about the next generation MacBook Air, which is said to have an M2 chip and a new look, that we had all but given up hope for a next generation 13in MacBook Pro, fully expecting that Apple would remove that model from the line up rather than update it. But then Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that there will be a new MacBook Pro with M2 chip in 2022.
As per his most recent weekend newsletter, Gurman has repeated his expectation that there will be a M2 MacBook Pro this year. He predicts that there will be a MacBook Pro with M2 chip in the autumn, but now he has more details:
- The new MacBook Pro will not have a TouchBar.
- In order for the entry-level device to differ from the Pro machines with M1 Pro and Max, Apple will not offer a mini LED display, instead the entry-level Mac will be equipped with a conventional LCD screen.
- Pro Motion will therefore also be missing.
- When it comes to performance the M2 will not match M1 Pro and Max.
- The SSD configurations of the new Mac probably remain at 2TB. The MacBooks Pro with M1 Max can offer up to 8TB SSD as a build-to-order option.

Other details
- Gurman and reasonably reliable (but now retired) leaker Dylankt have both suggested that the successor to the M1 13in MacBook Pro will have an M2 chip and a 14in diagonal screen, like the M1 Pro model.
- The entry price of £1,299/$1,299 is also expected to remain.
- Apple is thought to be increasing the number of graphics cores to ten (compared to eight for the M1).
- Whether Apple significantly improves the FaceTime camera in the new device is not known, but it seems likely.
